HEPES-Buffered Saline, or HBS, is a highly effective buffer for tissue culture because it maintains a stable physiological pH. It also outperforms other Good’s buffers in retaining buffering capacity even at low temperatures. HBS has been used as a component in isoelectric focusing gels because it improves the resolution of phosphoglucomutase.
