MCDB 131 was originally developed by Knedler and Ham and contains many components not present in traditional basal media, such as trace elements, putrescine, adenine, thymidine, and higher levels of amino acids and vitamins. After adding these ingredients, only a very small amount of serum or a well-defined component is needed to be added to the medium.
